You don’t have to go far away from home to be on Mission. West Lawn supports a large number of local ministries right here in our church and local community.

WLUMC Ministries & Service Opportunities

Adopt a School – Whitfield Elementary
West Lawn UMC is partnering with Wilson School District’s Whitfield Elementary School for the purposes of building a strong, sustaining relationship with this school, and providing help to transform the lives of children right here in our neighborhood.  Service opportunities include reading to younger students, school beautification projects & more!

Administrative Support
Serving a large congregation like West Lawn requires a lot of extra helping hands! The Church Office staff utilizes the assistance of many servants to help fold, collate, stuff envelopes or otherwise help with the dissemination of church communications such as the weekly bulletin, Crossroads, special mailings, etc.

Angel Tree Christmas Project
Angel Tree Ministry each year provides Christmas gifts to more than 350 children of incarcerated parents and those in services with Berks Connections/Pretrial Services. The gifts are received by these families at our Annual Gift Distribution Party held in our Community Center.

Attendance Data Entry
Because West Lawn is a busy, large congregation, it’s difficult to always take notice each week who is present, who is visiting, and who is potentially not in worship. For this reason, we encourage everyone to fill out our weekly Welcome slip tear-off to help track weekly attendance. Servants help enter this data into our computer database.

Audio/Visual Team
Mission: To enhance the worship experience and get God’s word out through audio-visual aids. Great “behind the scenes” activity for anyone who enjoys work in production!

Berks Friends in Fellowship (Adult Singles Group)
West Lawn organizes a county-wide adult Singles Ministry. If you are interested in a group that offers spiritual grounding, fellowship and fun activities to connect and build relationships, we invite you to join this group. We are currently seeking new leadership for this group. Contact the Church office if you are interested.

Bible Study
West Lawn regularly offers and supports various Bible study groups. These groups typically meet weekly at the church at various times of the day.

Blood Drive Coordinators
Mission: To provide blood to community hospitals. The Miller Keystone Blood Center operates a Blood Drive twice a year in the West Lawn Community Center. The Drive occurs in October and April from 3:00-7:00 p.m.

Bread Ministry (Visitor Follow-Up)
Mission: The Bread Ministry offers up a symbol of warmth and spiritual nourishment in the form of fresh bread, delivered to the homes of our first-time guests.

Cancer Support Group
Like our other support groups, the Cancer Support Group is designed to help those going through cancer treatments, as well as to help family members and friends of cancer patients. If you are looking for such a group, or would like to facilitate this group, contact the Church Office.

Caring Community
Mission: To provide encouragement, a loving presence and a link to Christ’s body to those who are no longer able to gather at the church because of physical difficulties through a dedicated group of people who visit regularly in nursing and retirement facilities, and homes.

Child Evangelism Fellowship
Mission: Child Evangelism Fellowship is an organization interested in reaching the children of Reading and Berks County with the gospel message. Programs include Good News Club, Summer Day Camp, and Playground Ministries. The ministry also trains volunteers in leading the various programs.

Children’s Church (Teachers, Substitute Teachers)
Following a Children’s Sermon in our 11:10 worship service, kids ages 3 through Grade 5 are invited to participate in a 20-minute Children’s Church program upstairs in the Community Center. Children engage in fun games and activities to further learn Bible stories and lessons. Additional teachers are desired for this growing program.

Children’s Library Ministry
Mission: To provide a valuable Christian education resource through a variety of books and videos that provide information and inspiration for children from birth thru 5TH Grade – signed out through the honor system. We are seeking additional assistance with our Library Ministry. (The Children’s Library is generously provided in memory of Frank Knerr, a long-time member and supporter of children’s ministries.)

Circle of Friends
Mission: To provide Christian fellowship through social events and outings with others of like needs and interests, to build rich friendships, to strengthen home life, and serve our church and community. Any adult is welcome. Events are once a month, usually the second Saturday evening.

Communion Preparation Coordinators
Individuals help prepare the communion elements before the services. (Scheduled seven times a year)

Communion Servers
Individuals are always needed to help distribute the elements on Communion Sundays. Consider helping with this ministry during any of our four worship services.

Confirmation Class
Each school year, West Lawn offers a Confirmation class program geared towards 8th grade students. This program is led by a group of adult teachers. Every confirmand is assigned an adult mentor from our congregation.

Couples Retreat
Escape the business of life, and experience the tranquility of a getaway with your spouse. Strengthen your marriage through undistracted time together, Bible teaching, worship, great food, and more. We encourage you to consider organizing such a retreat for West Lawn couples.

Diabetes Support Group
This support group helps those living with diabetes. Join us for support, fellowship and idea sharing in an empowering, faith-based atmosphere.

Divorce Care Support Group
Find help and healing for the hurt of separation and divorce through this support group. If interested in facilitating this class, please contact the church office.

Drama Worship Team
Mission: To enhance our worship experience through drama and communicate God’s message in alternative ways.

Faithful Friends Consignment Sale
The Faithful Friends Children’s and Maternity Consignment Sale occurs twice annually, once in the fall and once in the spring, in our Community Center. ALL proceeds and donated goods from the sale go directly a local non-profit agency to help less fortunate individuals in our community. Consigners, volunteers, donations and a core planning team all make up this massive event. For more details, visit:

Family Promise
Mission: Family Promise is a national organization whose goal is to alleviate homelessness by fostering the development of Networks that provide shelter, meals, and assistance for homeless families. Part of the Berks County network, our church will provide overnight housing and an evening meal to homeless families for four weeks during the year. This is one ministry where families have an opportunity to minister to families who are experiencing difficult times.

Fellowship Time (HeBrews Café & Community Center)
Mission: To provide a way for members and visitors to meet and greet one another, enjoy a time of companionship and friendship among brothers and sisters in God’s church (with snacks, soft drinks and coffee, of course!)

Flower Ministry
Mission: To deliver flowers left over from Sunday services to the sick and homebound.

Funeral Hospitality Ministry
Mission: To Help families feel loved during a difficult time by helping to set up luncheons or providing baked goods for a funeral or memorial service luncheon.

Gideon’s International
The Gideons International is an interdenominational association of Christian business and professional men who are members of Protestant/evangelical churches. Members are dedicated to saving the lost through personal witnessing and the distribution of God’s Word in more than 190 countries around the world.

Griefshare – Grief Recovery Support
Mission: To create a safe, loving, Christian environment for people to come together who are grieving from the loss of a loved one. We journey through the grieving process with a 13-week Biblically-based video series, discussion group and workbook to help begin the healing process.

Hannah’s Hope Mentors
Hannah’s Hope, a non-profit agency located in Reading, assists homeless women and children find permanent housing, a circle of friends, and a plan for financial stability. One way Bridge of Hope ends and prevents homelessness for women and children is through the use of trained mentoring groups within congregations. Every woman who receives services from Hannah’s Hope is assigned a mentoring group comprised of 8-12 people from one church. These people can be from an existing small group/community group, or individuals in a church that come together for this unique service opportunity. If you are interested in mentoring others, consider this ministry.

Healing Prayer Ministry
West Lawn UMC offers a Prayer Ministry after every service, every Sunday, in the front of the Sanctuary and Community Center. The Prayer Ministers offer God’s healing to those suffering in body or spirit.

Helping Hands Mission Team
Helping Hands is a group of people who complete minor maintenance projects for the church, elderly, and shut-ins. We continually are seeking servants to join our team.

Hope Rescue Mission
This Christian mission organization, located in Reading, provides for the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of less fortunate men. West Lawn serves meals and brings worship services to the Mission on a regular basis.

Hospital Visitation Ministry
Mission: To give compassionate care and help to lift the spirits of those who are in the hospital. We offer comfort and hope by communicating with compassion: attention, acknowledgement, affection, and acceptance. We simply are present, listen, and pray with them in Christian love. Training is provided.

Keeping the Connection
Mission: To keep in contact with post high-school students by sending “care packages” to encourage them while away at college/work, to provide the young adult with strength to continue their faith walk while away. Click here for details regarding our PSU Welcome Bags.

Kitchen Ministry (West Lawn Wednesdays—Food Prep, Cooks, Servers, Clean Up; Special Events Team & Baking Ministry)
Mission: The kitchen ministry of West Lawn United Methodist Church is a Christ-centered group of volunteers that offer their time and talents to provide an environment that advances the ministries of the church. By providing a quality meal at a fair price we seek to create a loving Christian atmosphere that feeds both the body and the soul within our church family and beyond, ministering to those in need.

Library Ministry – Adult
Mission: To provide a valuable Christian education resource through a variety of books and videos that provide information and inspiration – signed out through the honor system. We are seeking additional assistance with our Library Ministry.

Little Acts of Love
Little Acts of Love is an outreach ministry of West Lawn United Methodist Church. Through volunteer youth and their leaders, community clean up and home repairs are completed for the elderly, disabled and low income homeowners at no cost. All materials are purchased through the donations of local businesses, churches and the groups attending. Maintenance Ministries (Window Cleaning, Small Repairs & Painting, Van Cleaning, Watchman Program, Staging, Set Up)
Taking care of West Lawn’s buildings and property takes a team of servants. During all seasons, there are a number of projects to tend to and buildings to secure.

Meals for New Parents
Mission: To help families with newborns by preparing dinners after mother and baby return from the hospital. New parents have been so grateful, allowing these families more focused time to care for each other during this exciting yet stressful life transition.

Music Ministries (Chancel Choir, Choral Ensemble, Festival Choir, Praise Team, Bell Choir, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble, Children’s Choir, Chime Choir)
Mission: The music ministry is comprised of many choral and instrumental groups, which offer all an opportunity to share the Good News in music with the congregation and the community.

Neighborhood Mission Team
Mission: To provide Life/Safety Handyman services to the Elderly, Handicapped, Single Mom and Dad Families and Organizations that have none or limited family or financial resources to help them.

New Journey Clothing Closet
Mission: To help bring comfort to those in need of clothing. A collection bin is located in the Education Building stairwell for all donations. Servants pick up and drop off all donations from West Lawn to New Journey on a weekly basis.

New Journey Soup Kitchen
Mission: To bring nourishment and hope to our homeless community in Berks County. Servants from WLUMC staff the soup kitchen in Reading the 2nd and 4th Monday each month from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., serving as many as 140 hungry clients over the lunch hour.

New Roads Ministry
Individuals involved in the New Roads Ministry work with men and women being released from prison. Mentors help provide a sense of community around a shared meal, along with support, prayer and fellowship for released inmates.

Nursery Assistants
Mission: To care for the young children of our congregation as their parents attend worship. At 8:00 and 11:00, there is care for infants through kindergarten. At 9:30, there is infant care and Sunday School for 1-2 year olds.

Opportunity House
Mission: To provide multiple services that improve the quality of life for children, families and adults who face various obstacles to independence, and to support their efforts to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency and well-being. Opportunity House is sponsored by United Way and the Berks Chamber. WLUMC prepares meals at the church, delivers, and serves them to the shelter twice a month.

Post-Hospitalization Meals
Mission: To help families care for each other when members come home from the hospital with meals prepared and delivered to their homes: ill, homebound, have special needs. Confidentiality is a must and privacy is respected.

Prayer Chain (Email and Phone)
We believe in the power of prayer. Teams of prayer groups pray for all the prayer requests that are received on Sunday mornings, via our website and through other means of communication.

Prison Ministry
Mission: To minister to women and men in prison here in Berks County, offering hope to those willing to reach out and discover the transforming power of God and, through Angel Tree Christmas Project, serve children whose mother or father is incarcerated, on parole, or trying to get back on track. Members of our congregation provide clothing and other Christmas gift items for each child, then other servant/members sort and deliver them to each family.

Safe Haven Lighthouse
Mission: To offer diverse activities and resources that encourages individual and group involvement with children in an enjoyable, safe, and relaxed Christian atmosphere. After-school program is from 3-5:30 every Wednesday with various activities with a Christian emphasis for K-6th graders. The program is staffed by WLUMC servants who have a love of children and a desire to serve the Lord by using their talents and gifts in this capacity.

Scripture Readers
Each Sunday, during all four worship services, individuals in our congregation read the scripture to the congregation before each sermon. We welcome you to be one of our readers.

Short Term Mission Trips
West Lawn is actively engaged in short term mission trips with in Mississippi, Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, Tanzania, Africa, Haiti and other areas where help is needed.

Small Groups
Mission: Groups of 3 to 15 people coming together to share life’s journey and foster learning and Christian growth. Small groups may include those comprised of young parents with children, empty-nesters, neighbors, divorcees, dog owners, gardeners, parents with teenagers or pre-schoolers, single adults, women, youth, just about any group of people seeking fellowship and a closer relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Stephen Ministry
Mission: Stephen Ministers listen, explore feelings, pray, share Christ’s love, and maintain confidentiality to plant hope in a person who is struggling with one of life’s many difficulties.

Sunday School  – Children (Teachers, Substitute Teachers)
Our Sunday morning children’s Sunday School program includes classes for infants through teenagers. Through the use of MANY servant teachers and assistants, our congregation continues to study His word every week.

Sunday School – Adult Class Coordinator
Ordering curriculum, scheduling teachers and assistants, keeping the classrooms orderly, and making sure supplies are available are the tasks of this coordinator position.

Tween Group
Our “exclusive” Tween group meets regularly throughout the school year for pre-teens in grades 4 and 5. Tweens are invited to bring their friends for evenings of great fellowship, games, food and fun as they explore who they are and what they are on this Earth to do! Tweens meet on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Community Center.

Ushers and Greeters
Mission: Ushers and greeters welcome and assist all those who enter the sanctuary by greeting them, handing out bulletins and assisting them with seating. They also take the offering at each service. Others assist at our Sunday AM Welcome Centers.

Vacation Bible School
West Lawn’s Vacation Bible School is unlike any “school” your children knows – it is an experience! For five consecutive days every summer, children from all over the area come together on our campus for an entertaining, educational and very active themed camp. Over 150 servants are involved in the planning and teaching of VBS.

Van Ministry (Sunday Morning and Special Events)
Mission: To provide transportation to and from Worship on Sunday mornings and for special events. A two-session new driver certification class is offered at no cost for those wishing to participate in this ministry.

Walk to Emmaus
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The aim of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, workplaces and communities. It is also an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as he is revealed to you through other believers. Welcoming Ministry
Mission: The Welcoming Team takes to heart the first part of our mission statement, INVITE, and makes guests feel like they belong through a handshake, conversation, open door, phone call, and answers to questions.

West Lawn United Methodist Women
WLUMW offers three circles of Christian fellowship and growth. Our UMW Circle meets the third Tuesday in the HeBrews Café with a speaker, devotions and refreshments. The Needlework Circle meets the first and third Thursday to sew, knit and crochet for worthy causes. The Craft Circle meets the second Thursday to learn a new craft, share lunch and enjoy fellowship.

West Lawn Wednesday
Mission: To provide a respite of love and light in the middle of the week by feeding the body at dinner and the soul with classes, worship and activities afterward. Kitchen Ministry, Disciple Classes and Youth Groups round out the offerings.

Western Berks Shepherding Ministry
On occasion, friends of West Lawn need help getting to and from places when recovering from an illness, are without their own car, or simply can no longer drive independently. Helping others get to the grocery store, pick up prescriptions or run other similar errands is the purpose of this ministry. If you enjoy driving and helping others, consider serving in this capacity.

Wilson Area Food Pantry
Mission: To distribute food to needy residents in the area in partnership with the Greater Berks Food Bank.

Women at the Well
Mission: To bring women of all ages and backgrounds, married or not, together to lift each other up through the “living water” of the Holy Spirit as they share insights, experiences, struggles and strengths.

Women’s Book Club
Mission: To provide a forum for women to advance their Christian education in a facilitated group environment and weekly discussion.

Women’s Retreat Coordinator
The WOW small group – Women of Worth – has now also evolved into the organizers of the annual event. Retreat weekends are always held the 1st weekend in November.  Currently, the venue is the Traber Center in Spring City, PA.   We enjoy a weekend away from our daily routine to experience wonderful worship, fellowship, sessions with our speaker to dig deep into the Bible, and learn new ways to experience God’s love and grace.  We discover we are not alone in our struggles.  We also enjoy free time to stroll the grounds or pamper yourself with a massage, time for arts/crafts, read, watch a movie or just enjoy each other’s company. AND GREAT FOOD!!!  

Worship Set Design Team
On occasion, we include props and set designs to enhance a sermon series and worship environment. Those with creative minds and talented hands are needed to conceptualize, design and build these elements. More servants are needed on this team!

Young Adult Ministry 
While West Lawn offers ministries and missions of all sorts, it’s nice to be connected to a peer group, especially when you are a young adult. We invite individuals between 18-35 to come together for fellowship and Christian enrichment.

Youth Ministry
Just like the church, our mission is to INVITE, EMBRACE AND EMPOWER the students. We have three separate meeting times each week that specifically targets each of these areas. We also strive to have monthly events, quarterly retreats and annual mission’s trips. Our youth meet on Sundays from 6-8 PM. This provides an opportunity for students to experience the invitation to enter into a relationship with our Savior Jesus Christ, as well as to easily extend that invitation to their friends. Small Groups meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 PM (with dinner at 6:00 PM). Provides an opportunity for our students and leaders to Embrace one another and to walk closely together on their spiritual journey.

Senior and Junior High Sunday School 
Sunday Mornings at 9:30 AM (SH in the Firehouse Café, JH in Room 202). Provides an opportunity to empower our students to have confidence in their identity in Christ, to speak boldly about their faith, and to reflect the love of God everywhere they go.
