Appalachia Service Project 2023 Recap Video
This past July, for the second consecutive year, West Lawn UMC sent a mission team to the Appalachia Mountain region to serve those in need. Twenty-four people traveled more than 450 miles to Wyoming County, West Virginia to give their time and offer their skills with the Appalachian Service Project (ASP). Thirteen youth and eleven adults – ranging in age, personality, and construction skills – formed two teams, working on separate homes for the week. One team constructed a pressure-treated, wood handicap ramp, allowing the homeowner access to her yard and the ability to spend quality time with her grandchildren. The other team installed vinyl siding on a single-story home and put in a 100-foot French drain. Homeowners and our mission team participants were transformed by the love of God and one another during this amazing week. For more than fifty years, ASP has “accepted people right where they are, just the way they are,” ensuring that Appalachian families have homes that are warmer, safer, and drier. West Lawn UMC will return to ASP next year from July 28 thru August 3, 2024.
